The first wave of the worldwide struggle for women’s rights was centred on the suffragette movement in the UK. It was the activities of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WPSU) led by Emmeline Pankhurst which captured the greatest attention and which was finally dramatised in the 2015 film Suffragette.
