“The UK today boasts the ninth highest level of income inequality  amongst the world’s biggest economies. This was registered in 2022 by a record total of 177 UK billionaires living in the lap of luxury whilst nearly four million workers faced destitution.”

British imperialism – the system of class rule that has exploited hundreds of millions of workers at home and abroad – is in crisis. As it navigates a course through the turbulent waters of a new world order dominated by the simmering rivalry between the USA and China, its billionaire rulers are investing heaviily in a high-tech programme of military rearmament.

Despite a stagnant economy accompanied by a prolongedsocial crisis, the UK is still home to a financial services industry valued at £28-30 trillion, ten times its public sector debt of £2.7 trillion.

Masking these glaring inequalities stands the Union Jack, the symbol of monarchy and the new empire of capital that thirsts for even more profit. However, the recent surge of flag waving jingoism can only go so far. As the collection of writingsin this book clearly show, the Union and Empire are beset by intractable problems. As in Europe, Britain is being buffeted by a gathering storm that is fracturing bourgeois politics in a manner not witnessed since the 1930s.

This book helps lay bare this process in its various dimensions, both historically and contemporarily
